Happy Birthday Zola!!

Today Zola is 1 year old. I found her birth date when I went looking for her rabies certificate to lisence her. We have only had her for a few months but it feels like it has been longer. Because of her small size and antics it doesn't feel like we missed out on her puppyhood at all. She is joy personified.

As you can see she's definately filled out a little since we got her. She is up to 12 lbs from her former 10 which seems to suit her better. Hopefully she will continue to maintain on her medications and diet and we will have more birthdays to celebrate with her. Happy Birthday Zola!!

Basic Puppy Training, The Ultimate Dos And Donts Guide

Begin puppy training as soon as you bring your new puppy home - don't wait for bad habits to set in!

Always put puppy in a crate or tiny confined area when you cannot be watching him/her.

Take puppy out every hours for potty breaks - & ALWAYS after eating, sleeping & excited play.


Always give lots of praise for toileting on cue & in the right place.


Always correct bad behaviour at the moment it is happening.

Puppy proof your house - keep tempting & risky items out of reach & out of sight.


Use a guttural or growl tone & a loud clap of the hands to correct.


Always praise puppy as soon as he/she stops.


Puppies require lots of sleep. When puppy is sleeping leave him be.


Keep in mind to finish every training session on a positive note - make it lots of FUN!


When playing along with your puppy do so quietly & gently.

The things below is what you NEVER EVER DO !!!


Use hands for punishment - hitting, grabbing, dragging & forcing the puppy down creates fearful submission or aggressive retaliation. 
Never-  Assume that he'll "grow out" of bad behaviour - it is your job to teach him right from wrong.


Never-  Encourage behaviour in a puppy that you don't need to see in an adult dog - eg. biting hands, leaping up.


Never-  Use your dog's name in a hostile tone - his name ought to be a positive.


Never- Reprimand after the fact - in the event you see facts, but have missed the bad behaviour - it is late!

Never-  Give your puppy free run of the house - until he knows the rules he will do whatever suits him.


Never-  Leave children in charge of a puppy - adult supervision is imperative.


Never-  Let your puppy off leash unless the environment is entirely safe & secured.


Never-  Rub puppy's nose in his pee or poop - it is very traumatizing to the pup & makes NO sense at all.

Never-  Give in to your puppy's demands - if puppy wins, puppy rules!

These boots are made for training

I've been taking Jenny to Lowes on Sundays with a friend so we can train out of the cold. I found making time with someone else keeps me on task and less likely to skip it. Skills in dog training are use it or lose it for the dogs after all. Thankfully Lowes is very dog friendly and has plenty of space. I ran into a problem recently I thought I would share in case others had the same issue. It turns out Jenny has a calous on both of her hocks. If I train to long on a hard surface she gets abrasions on them and they get sore. (shown in the middle of the hock in the photo)

I took some vet wrap and 2 make up remover pads to make a padded "hock boot" for her. I use 1 pad per leg because to much padding might not be comfortable either. As it is she hesitates to sit when I first put them on.

As you can see when she sits her hocks touch the ground. Without any padding of her own this becomes a problem when working on any hard surface for to long.

It is a fluke that the vet wrap matches her Fido Fleece coat. I know, very 80's leg warmers right?

For our trial run I took her for a normal walk in Rockland. I realized we have some semi-famous places I could show. This is her in front of antique shop featured on the show "Born Dealers".

I almost always walk my dogs on Main streets because there usually aren't loose dogs on a main road. We do also have a scenic boardwalk I like. Plus there is always an opportunity for window shoping and seeing what is going to be playing at the local Strand theater. http://www.rocklandstrand.com/ I grew up watching movies at the Strand however it has since been refurbished and is much more amazing then when I was young. The first movie I remember seeing? Lady and the Tramp. Maybe the seeds for my dog obsession were sown there?

I only had some minimum slippage by the end of the walk. I used them again today and didn't have that problem but I put them on a little higher to begin. Anyhow I hope if anyone else has run into the same issue this post is helpful. I might also try knitting a slide on "hock sock" and see it that works too. I'll be sure to post results if I do. Of course I have to find some free time for that first. Not something I've had much of lately.

Anaheim's Dog Stolen in Home Invasion Robbery Reunited with Family

The Story of Anaheim's Dog Stolen in Home Invasion Robbery Reunited with Family - It happened on Wednesday morning at a home in the 10400 block of Brookhurst Street, near Cerritos Avenue, in an unincorporated area of the county.


Police are looking for an armed home invasion robber who terrorized a grandfather in Orange County, before stealing some electronics & the family's dog.


The 59-year-old victim, who spoke to KTLA, said they saw a man come in to his yard & try to steal his cockatoos.


"I saw the man carrying my birds, & then I asked him what is they going to do with my birds? & then they lays it down, pick[s] up the gun, & I start jogging inside."


The man said they locked the back door behind him, but the suspect, armed with a semiautomatic handgun, broke it down.

The suspect found him hiding in a back bathroom, & pointed the gun at his head.


"He was pointing the gun at me. I said, 'Probably, this is my last,'" the man told KTLA.


They pleaded with the suspect not to shoot him.


The suspect ran away with a computer, some other items & the relatives pet, a one-year-old Chihuahua named Blanca.


Fortunately, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino was at the scene, & decided to drive around the neighborhood & look for the dog.


They found her only a few blocks away, & returned her to the relatives.


Someone with information is asked to call the Orange County Sheriff's Department.


The suspect remains at giant.
