This will teach you How To Stop Puppy Biting Problem
Managing and controlling puppy biting problems can be a major challenge for us dog lovers. Puppy biting or nipping starts out as a bit of fun, but needs to be controlled quickly to avoid ongoing problems.
For most young puppies biting is a perfectly natural and essential phase to go through, especially when they are teething.
Puppies love to sink their sharp little fangs into just about anything during this teething stage, including the hands and feet of their owners. In some cases it's like you've brought a snappy alligator into your home, instead of the cuddly little puppy you had hoped for.
The good news is that most puppies can be trained to regulate and minimize the biting pretty easily. The sooner you start to educate your puppy in bite inhibition (having a soft mouth) the easier it will be - for all concerned.
How To Stop Puppy Biting Problems
There a lots of proven training methods to help correct your puppy's behavioral problems. Before I get into the specific techniques you can use to stop your puppy from biting, always keep these general dog behavior training rules in mind:
Puppy socialization and bite inhibition training go hand in hand.
Never slap or hit your puppy in the face. This does not work! Your puppy will just think you are playing or could become afraid of you. This may even lead to some much bigger problems than simple puppy nipping.
The general rule to stop puppy biting problems is to always encourage acceptable behavior and always discourage unacceptable behavior. To learn more about this fundamental rule of dog obedience training (including how to stop biting problems) visit Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer.
While you are trying to stop your puppies from biting, never play tug of war, wrestling or chase type games with them. This only encourages the biting and nipping.
Whichever method you choose to train your puppy the golden rule is be consistent. This means that you and anyone else who comes into contact with your puppy must enforce your chosen strategy every time your pup takes a nip.
If you don't clearly communicate to your dog that the biting is unacceptable, he will not know he is doing anything wrong. It's up to you to show him what is acceptable behavior, don't just expect your puppy to know this! (You are really taking on the role of his littermates for this task).
Another (extreme) reason puppies can bite is if they are trying to assert their dominance over you. If this is the case with your puppy, it must be stopped immediately. When you have a dominant puppy his biting will only be the beginning of many behavioral problems. Stop Your Puppy From Biting - Proven Techniques
Your goal to start with is to teach your puppy how to control the force of his/her biting. Your puppy's littermates will initiate this process and then it is up to you to continue on with it when your new puppy arrives home. This will ensure (not guarantee) that if your dog does bite someone in the future the damage will be minimized. When you have given your puppy sufficient feedback regarding the strength of his bite only then can you begin to reduce the prevalence of the biting behavior.
If you catch the biting problem early on it may be easy to rectify. Just try to redirect the biting from your flesh to a toy or chew bone. For very young puppies this method is often all you'll need do. As soon as your pup starts to bite your hands just let out a firm "No!" and replace your fingers with the chew toy (or ice cube if your puppy is teething).
This is probably the most popular method and my personal favorite. Make your puppy think he is hurting you each time he has a nip at you. This method replicates the way dogs sort out this biting amongst themselves. When puppies are biting and nipping each other it only stops when one puppy lets out a yelp. We can use this natural way dogs learn by letting out an Ouch! or an Arrr! every time one of our puppy's bite. The trick is to startle your dog with your voice, and then pull away and stop playing with your puppy for a while. Your pup will soon learn that when he starts to bite, his playmate (you) goes away.
Teach your puppy the obedience training command "Leave It!". This method works great but is more suitable for older puppies.
In bad biting cases as soon as your puppy latches onto your hand say "No!" and quickly put your thumb inside his mouth under his tongue, and your other finger under his chin. Hold it there for about 10 seconds (not too tightly). This will feel uncomfortable to your puppy plus he won't be able to bite you.
"Always Praise And Reward A Gentle Mouth And Ignore Or Withdraw From Inappropriate Nipping"
Again if your puppy has a severe biting problem you can try this training technique. Put on a pair of gloves and apply a foul tasting substance to them (something your dog doesn't like). Your dog will soon learn that if he bites you, it won't be tasty! This method produces a strong negative association to your dog every time he decides to bite you. Some dogs are smart enough to realize that when you take your foul tasting gloves off, it is fine to sink their fangs into you again!
For older puppies (around 6 months) this is a sure fire technique to stop puppy mouthing. Put a pinch or choke collar on your puppy and each time he bites you give the lead a short sharp tug. This correction will form an unpleasant association to your dog every time he bites you. It won't take him long to stop. Some trainers believe this method to be fairly extreme, and I agree that you would only need to call on it in very rare circumstances - I have never needed to go to this level. I believe it's far more effective to educate your puppy rather than inflicting punishment or trying to extinquish a behavior altogether.
How to stop a puppy from biting - these methods have been recommended to me, but I have never tried them myself:
Spray your puppy with water every time he starts nipping.
Fill up an empty can with rocks or coins. Each time your puppy starts biting say No! and give the can a shake. Apparently puppies hate this rattling noise.
If you're worried that you may have an overly aggressive puppy on your hands, please seek the advice of an experienced animal behaviorist or dog trainer.
As we already know earlier the most important piece of advice regardless of which training method you choose is to be consistent and provide the clear feedback your puppy needs to learn, keep learning, this tips on How To Stop Puppy Biting Problem could be the start.

Pet Owners May Have a Healthier Heart
What a happy news indeed that you pet owners may have a Healthier Heart!
It’s well known that owning a pet has many health benefits. However, a new study reported in the American Journal of Cardiology shows that pet owners with chronic ailments may even have healthier, more adaptable hearts.
The study followed people with conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol and found that they had more changes in heart rate than people without pets during the same period of time, indicating that they were more adaptable and would therefore less likely to be less taxed under certain circumstances; for instance, high-stress situations. Previous studies suggest several reasons why pet owners may have healthier hearts.
If you own a dog, you’re likely engaging in more exercise and physical activity, faring better against commonly more sedentary non-pet owners.
Also, according to findings compiled from psychologists at Miami University and St. Louis University and published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, both dog and cat owners have been linked to lower levels of anxiety and stress. Perhaps these are also correlated with the other emotional benefits gained from their furry companions, including fewer tendencies toward loneliness and higher self-esteem.
Regardless of whether or not you are a pet owner, following heart-healthy habits is the best way to help ensure long-term wellness and help prevent heart disease, including maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, eating well, and regularly checking cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

The weekly roundup
First I'll start with the best news, Brutus has been adopted!! Not just to any home either, he nabbed himself one of the best homes I could think of. I am very pleased. He certainly deserves it.
*
Jenny and I have been walking more together because I need the exercise. I've always known she is athletic but wow, I had no idea! Saturday we are walking in a 5K locally with some friends. (Prudence and Leo and their people.) I decided to pre-walk it to challenge myself to see how fast we could do it. Our time was 43 minutes. Not to shabby! Sadly Jenny finished stronger than me which means I need to get in better shape.
The other thing I am doing on Saturday is hitting The Loyal Biscuit, one of my favorite haunts, for a book signing. Jen Blood (http://www.bloodwrites.com) is signing her book All the Blue-Eyed Angels there from 11:00 to 2:00. One of the characters in the book is a dog named Einstein. Check out the model search contest you can enter your own dog in to win some swag: http://jenniferblood.net/wp/einstein-the-dog-photo-contest/ The book is excellent btw. I'm not even normally a mystery reader (aside from Susan Conant) but this book hooked me.
This is how I picture Einstein:
For the record this is a Pumi, a Hungarian herding breed. Very adorable and muppet like looking. How cute is that? It seems most of them bark a lot however which is a deal breaker for me personally.
*
The 2 new prison puppies have started. They are super sweet. They are litter-mates believe it or not. Mom was listed as a boxer mix but clearly at least one of the dads had some terrier in him. First there is Joshua.
And here is Justin.
They are super sweet and should be pretty easy to place once they graduate. They just needed to have some one on one time with a handler and learn to be a little more confident. So far so good!
*
I hope everyone who celebrates it had a Happy Easter or good Passover.

Dogs are loyal friends of man and unquestioning loyalty. It is a blind man named Graham Waspe that all his activities, especially outside the house in Stowmarket, Suffolk, England, is highly dependent on Edward, his beloved dog who has become his guide in the last 6 years.
"Edward is a highly trained dog. He is my eyes and he could read my mind, "Graham was very fortunate to have Edward. "Feeling like he has a GPS device with automatic voice control; all he need is just say 'the market', Edward will take you to the market."
But unfortunately their happy times together come to an end after the vets convicted of the cataracts that Edward have and they have to 'take' his eyes.
The End! Sad ending! End of story, both Graham and former guiding, Edward could only stay inside the house. Meanwhile, his wife Sandra could not take her out every time.
However this did not last long, the new guide has arrived.
Graham has just received a new dog named Opal, younger and more agile of course. "Opal and I are getting closer. He's as smart as Edward. I actually can not find any difference between them. "
Of his services to this family, Edward is allowed to stay together and follow the routines that were once done with Graham. Only, as the task of guiding been taken over by Opal, the lead dog his master who is blind as well as a blind dog.

Dog Collar Round-Up, Part II: The Front-Clip Harness
Front-Clip Harness |
Like the traditional harness, the front-clip harness fits around the shoulders, front legs, and over the back of the dog. Unlike the traditional version however, the leash doesn't attach above the dog's shoulders, but instead under the neck, in front of and between the shoulders. Therefore also like the traditional harness, this version is comfortable for the dog to wear and is a matter of health and safety for dogs with a delicate or injured neck, back, or trachea - because again pressure is applied only to the strongest parts of the dog's body.
The front-clip harness was invented, however, to solve the major problem with the traditional harness - namely pulling on the leash. Back-clip harnesses don't discourage, and even encourage pulling,a s they were designed primarily with sled dogs and tracking dogs in mind. But when a dog pulls on the front-clip harness, his front is pulled sideways, so he ends up pointing to the right or left instead of where he's trying to go - straight ahead. This usually defeats the dog's purpose for pulling, and he fairly quickly learns to stop trying.
The E-Z Walk |
So the front-clip harness is a huge advance over the traditional one. If you're going to use a harness, I advise a front-clip. Some owners swear by it, and some dogs are terrors on anything else. However, I still do not recommend it in general as a default means of walking.
For apart from discouraging leash-pulling, the front-clip harness shares the other disadvantages of the traditional harness. First of all, it does not giving the owner an effective means of communicating to the dog by tugging or tapping on the leash. When a leash is connected to a dog's neck, tugging or tapping instantly gets the dog's attention and can snap his mind out of whatever else he is obsessed with or focused on - like an alluring chicken bone, or another dog. Since harnesses don't touch any tender area like the neck, this tugging/tapping isn't as effective. The front-clip version also shares the disadvantage of not controlling the dog's head or mouth; so it shouldn't be used for dogs that readily bite.
Finally, E-Z Walks for some reason seem to slip loose, or the dog wriggles free, fairly frequently. I'm not sure why this is so, except that the traditional harness pulls back against the dog's shoulders when he pulls, in a direction that can't come loose; while the E-Z Walk pulls sideways, creating some gaps that can slip loose. For this reason some owners of the E-Z Walk use it in combination with a neck-collar, clipping the leash BOTH to the harness front-clip AND the neck collar at the same time for security. This, however, is fairly restrictive and cumbersome.
So here's my recap of the front-clip (e.g. E-Z Walk) harness.
Pros:
- Comfortable to wear
- Good for dogs with delicate or injured neck or trachea
- Discourages dogs from pulling on leash
Cons:
- Difficult to communicate to the dog with a leash-tug
- No control over dog's head or mouth
- Can sometimes wriggle loose
Overview: A huge advancement over the traditional back-clip harness. Can help stop your dog from pulling on leash. However if your dog has any other behavioral issues - like jumping, barking, lunging, or biting - it won't give you a means of controlling or correcting that behavior. Great for joyous, energetic pits or labs who pull and have NO other behavior problems - but many owners need more control over their dog in other areas.
